275: Best Advice I Would Give If Starting A Podcast
Today’s show is different from any previous STC episode. I’m doing a live coaching call, a new podcast format for me that is still in the experimental stage. If you’ve thought about starting your own podcast for even five minutes, then your brain has probably been bombarded with many questions. Join us as we discuss tips and advice for those who want to start a podcast.
Our Featured Guest
Steve Bisson, LMHC
Steve Bisson is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in Massachusetts. He’s written a book, Finding Your Way Through Therapy, and now he’s looking to start a podcast by the same name. Join us for this coaching call, where we cover many relevant topics. We’ll talk about whether to begin with a mission statement or business plan, how far out to record episodes, how to get guests, and more. We also discuss how you can promote your podcast in authentic ways. Join us for this live coaching call session!
You’ll Learn
● Why Steve decided to start a podcast, Finding Your Way Through Therapy, geared to those who want to go into therapy or refresh their energy as therapists
● Why the following questions and answers are important to consider:
○ Do I need to create a mission statement and business plan or leave things open and fluid?
■ Answer: Start with a plan for the podcast, but hold it loosely and allow evolution and growth.
○ How far in advance should podcast episodes be planned?
■ Answer: Try to plan 4-6 weeks ahead, but plan to take specific months off to take a break and get ahead on interviews.
○ How should I approach diversifying my income through my podcast?
■ Think about how your podcast topics can be monetized, look for ways to build your email list, and find ways to be of service to your audience.
○ How do I promote my podcast other than through a mailing list?
■ Create a podcast launch team from your phone contacts and Facebook friends.
○ How do I maintain the intimate feel to my podcast and keep “letting people in”?
■ Let your “sharing” be guided by what is helpful to others without embarrassing your loved ones.
○ How should I handle music bumpers for my podcast, or is that really important in the beginning?
■ Music adds uniqueness, personality, and flavor to your podcast, so it’s always a beneficial addition.
○ How should I go about lining up guests for my podcast?
■ Start with your local professional referral network, but then ask each guest for their personal suggestions of other relevant guests to contact.

WHO'S THIS GUY?
Hi. I'm Melvin. I'm a Vanderbilt-trained psychologist (PhD), entrepreneur, and online creator living in Philadelphia, PA.
In 2014, I began to think about how to use the therapy skills we learn in grad school, and in our clinical work into different realms (e.g., podcasting, consulting, online course creation, etc).
This allows us to serve others on larger scales while diversifying our income beyond 1 to 1 work.
I make podcasts and videos about business, tech, productivity, and lessons I'm learning from becoming the CEO of a lean, mean 5 person 100% remote team (we're not really mean..it just rhymed =P).
